Day without Immigrants

The media has been full of coverage about the turnout yesterday on May Day. Here’s a view of Market Street in San Francisco.

Hundreds of thousands of mostly Hispanic immigrants skipped work and took to the streets Monday, flexing their economic muscle in a nationwide boycott that succeeded in slowing or shutting many farms, factories, markets and restaurants.

Here in Green Valley, we noticed that Manuels was closed for the day, posting a sign that read, “Closed. We would like to serve you but we are understaffed.”

I’m sympathetic to their plight, but the Mexican version of our National Anthem was a real turnoff for me. We will find out in the days ahead if their efforts were helpful or harmful to their cause.

    You can’t see me in the picture, can you? That’s because I was 2 stories underground catching the subway the heck out of there–but it would have got me closer to home if the usual Market St. busses had been running and I was severely PO’d.
