Fraud at Dell?

Earlier this month I found a good price on a digital camera that I have wanted for a long time. I ordered it from Dell and it was delivered last week.

Today, I found that the best price for a Sandisk CompactFlash card was also from Dell, so I ordered it. The order was confirmed later and I went into my account at Dell only to discover another camera purchase was shown in my account, shipped today. Huh? What’s this all about?

I went to Customer Service online looking for an 800 number. None. Tried sending an email with both FireFox and Safari browsers on my Mac, with no apparent success.
Does Dell really believe that everyone has a PeeCee?

I found an online chat service so I tried that. Waited 10 minutes for a representative and got Agent Neethu Ninan. Wondered where he was located.

Turns out that someone with an AOL email address similar to my name said that they didn’t get their camera so Dell shipped out another one today. Only this one was sent to an address in Antioch, California. But not to worry, Neethu said, I wasn’t going to be billed for the replacement.

I was told by Neethu to contact the Fraud Department at Dell. Seems to me that this is their problem, but I will contact them and keep you advised.

What I am interested in finding out is how in the hell did someone get access to my account at Dell. They had to have my order number. Fortunately, I did not leave my credit card info on file.

I have run into the “It’s our fault but you have to work our system to get it resolved” several times. The latest was at Home Depot. The cashier made an error which I discovered while my purchases were being bagged. It was “too late” and I had to take it to the customer service desk to get it straighten out (which they did speedily and with no questions). I still don’t understand why the cashier couldn’t have fixed it. Your problem is more severe but it’s the same old crap!

Spent 30 minutes on the phone this morning trying to get some action. The phone number and extension given to me for the Fraud Department did not work.

Redirected to two different departments and was finally advised that the account was being suspended for fraud. Did not get any answer on how someone was able to access my account.

I was advised that I had to create a new account with Dell for future orders. Fat Chance!

    Honcho, I feel your pain.

My Mother’s medical insurance premium with Blue Cross/Blue Shield was an automatic debit from her checking account. When I requested a refund of unearned premium for the month of her death, I was told that they couldn’t credit her account, but would have to issue a check payable to her estate.

I am learning to loathe big corporations!

Received a phone call from Dell just now. No fraud they said. Some order clerk with Dell got into my account by mistake. I got a “thousand apologies.”

Stuff happens, I guess, but it cost me a lot of time.
