The Charlotte Ambach House Remodeling Project

Remodeling of the house of this famous World War II hero of the Belgium underground, located at 1100 W. Circulo del Sur, began September 1, 2004, and continued during the spring and summer of 2005.

When purchased, the house had a chocolate brown carpet throughout except for the kitchen and laundry room. They had imitation red brick linoleum.

The inside pool area was 900 square feet, with the space outside the pool covered with green indoor/outdoor carpet and not suited for any practical purpose.

The following changes have been made:

• The entire interior of the house has been painted or repainted.

• The air conditioning/heating system has been reengineered to give each entity – the main house, pool area and new Arizona Room — its own system.

• New blinds were installed in the dining area.

• New tile was installed throughout the house except for the two bedrooms.

• New Berber carpet has been laid in the two bedrooms.

• Whitney-Burns plantation shutters hung for the large arched window in the living room.

• Plantation shutters have been installed for the patio doors in each bedroom, to provide additional privacy.

• In the kitchen, a new stove, microwave, matching color sink and faucet, and Halogen lights over the sink have been installed.

• New toilets replaced the older white ones in both baths.

• The three metal sliding “patio” doors were replaced with Andersen wooden doors, stained slightly darker than natural wood.

• Cabinet doors in the laundry and bathrooms were painted white to brighten rooms.

• Solar screens have been installed for the arched windows of the pool area and for the new Arizona Room patio door and glass windows on each side.

• The unused pool area was partitioned and converted into a new Arizona Room with a second wood-burning fireplace and wet bar.

• Blinds were added for the patio door and window of the new Arizona Room.

• A new pool heater using propane has been installed. The sheds on the rear patio area for the circulation and other pool equipment are new.

• A back gate has been added to comply with the Pima County code for filling the propane tank and for easier access to the patio.

• The indoor pool has been acid-washed, the tile inside the pool cleaned of mineral scales, the pool painted with three coats of light blue epoxy, and the area around the pool painted.

• The guest bedroom with a Murphy bed has been furnished with linens, TV, TV stand, lamp and bedside table.

• The new Arizona Room has been completely furnished, including a sleeper sofa to be used as an additional guest room.

• New Mission-style exterior lights have been put on the front of the house and in the pool area.

• The wood Ramada on the easy side has been painted along with any exposed surfaces on the entire exterior.

• The two-car garage floor has been painted with two coats of epoxy.
