One more day to go
It started last November when I received a letter from Secure Horizons notifying me that my health plan (Secure Horizons Medicare POS) was going to be discontinued, and that I had until December 31, to select a new plan.
OK, I procrastinated. My bad. In the early part of December, I went through the entire process again, trying to select the plan that was best for me.
After hours online at comparison of all the available drug plans. I finally decided upon a Medicare Drug Plan with Humana.
I called Secure Horizons and advised them on the plan I wanted. No, there was no way to enroll on the phone or online. I asked that they send out the enrollment materials ASAP. They did send it by priority mail in time to reach me January 4th. Great! That meant that it could not be effective until February 1st.
Humana, on the other hand, had online enrollment and promptly sent out my Prescription Drug Plan Card. Of course, it too is not effective until February 1st. Fortunately, I had the foresight to order a ninety day supply of what few drugs I take in December.
Gotcha, Secure Horizons. How does that make YOU feel?
They’re so damn big they won’t even be aware.
Moral? It takes these companies a horribly long time to act upon your request for enrollment. If your plan is discontinued, and take it from me - it can happen, or if you are selecting a HMO, PPO or Medigap plan for the first time, start your research months in advance, and don’t think for a minute that three weeks is plenty of time to enroll.
Me? I just have another 12 hours or so to stay well.
